King of Shumava: Phantom of the Dark Region is a series set in spring 1948, when Cold War tensions simmer between East and West. Josef Hasil, a twenty-four-year-old cook stationed at a National Security Corps kitchen in Zvonková, has already survived a German labor camp and served as a partisan liaison during the war. Now he craves adventure and freedom in the deep forests of Šumava that divide the two superpowers. Politics holds no interest for him—he wants only fun and escape. As Josef navigates this divided landscape, his carefree nature collides with the paranoia and danger of an emerging Iron Curtain, where personal desire and geopolitical reality prove impossible to separate.
