Root Into Europe is a British comedy-drama series that follows Henry Root, a cantankerous fish dealer and ardent Eurosceptic who appoints himself England's "European regulator" after writing to Prime Minister John Major. Convinced of his mission to uphold English values across the continent, Root embarks on a tour of Europe with his long-suffering wife Muriel, who documents their misadventures on camcorder for a BBC documentary that will almost certainly never air. Based on William Donaldson's satirical Henry Root Letters, the series stars George Cole as the bluff, opinionated Root and Pat Heywood as Muriel. Written by Donaldson and Mark Chapman, the five-episode run aired on ITV in 1992, offering sharp comedy rooted in early-90s anxieties about European integration and British identity.
