Dumb Luck(1990)

Dumb Luck is a Vietnamese series set in 1920s Hanoi under French colonial rule. The story follows Xuan, a sharp-witted orphan working as a ball boy at a tennis court, whose life transforms when he meets Doan, a sexually repressed widow. Through her, Xuan gains entry to the hypocritical world of the Westernized petite bourgeoisie—a class of wealthy Hanoians caught between colonial influence and traditional values. The eight-part adaptation of Vu Trong Phung's classic satire explores the absurdities and contradictions of this society through Xuan's eyes, blending dark humor with sharp social commentary on class, desire, and cultural collision.
