High Hopes is a Welsh sitcom set in the fictional South Wales Valleys town of Cwm-Pen-Ôl. The show follows widow Elsie Hepplewhite and her son Richard, whose get-rich-quick schemes form the heart of the comedy. Richard teams up with two former burglars—Hoffman and Charlie—who attempted to rob the family home in the pilot episode and never quite left. Produced by Gareth Gwenlan for BBC Wales, High Hopes debuted nationally in 1999 before settling into a regular series run from 2002. The show ran for six seasons, with the final six episodes airing on BBC1 Wales in late 2008. Its blend of character-driven humor and working-class Welsh life made it a fixture of BBC comedy throughout the 2000s.
