A Man Called Sloane is a secret agent adventure series that aired on NBC during the 1979–1980 season. Robert Conrad stars as Thomas R. Sloane III, a freelance spy who accepts assignments from UNIT, a covert American intelligence agency run by "The Director" (Dan O'Herlihy). UNIT operates from a hidden headquarters accessed through a toy store, and faces constant threats from KARTEL, a sinister rival organization. Sloane's missions are supported by Torque (Ji-Tu Cumbuka), his lethal partner equipped with a mechanical hand featuring interchangeable tools, and Effie, an AI computer voice (Michele Carey). The series blends familiar spy-fiction tropes from The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Mission: Impossible, and Conrad's earlier The Wild Wild West into a high-budget adventure. Despite its polished production, the show failed to find an audience and was cancelled after just 12 episodes.
