Die Alpensaga(1976)

Die Alpensaga is a six-part Austrian film series that traces rural life from 1900 to 1945 through the eyes of a peasant family in Upper Austria. Rather than romanticizing mountain village life, the series offers a critical examination of the era's social structures and the upheaval of two world wars. It deliberately distances itself from the traditional Heimatfilm genre, rejecting pastoral clichés to present a grittier, more honest portrait of how ordinary Austrians experienced the century's most turbulent decades. The narrative follows how global historical forces shaped the daily lives, struggles, and moral choices of people in a small Alpine community, revealing the human cost of modernization, conflict, and social change.
