Crystal Boys(2003)
Crystal Boys is a Taiwanese series set in 1971 Taipei, following A-Qing, a sensitive teenager expelled from school and disowned by his family after his same-sex relationship with classmate Zhao Ying is exposed. Seeking refuge and community, A-Qing gravitates toward New Park, a clandestine gathering place for gay men where he discovers friendship among fellow outcasts. The series traces his journey and that of his peers as they navigate love, desire, and survival in a deeply conservative society. Through intimate character studies, Crystal Boys captures the resilience and bonds that sustain a marginalized community, offering a nuanced portrait of Taiwan's underground gay subculture during a repressive era. It's a poignant exploration of identity, belonging, and the courage required to live authentically when society demands invisibility.
