Schauspielereien(1978)

Schauspielereien is a 1930s German drama following two young theater actors whose love is tested by Nazi persecution. Maria Rheine and Mark Löwenthal perform together in a small Berlin theater until racial laws force Mark, a Jew, to leave mainstream German stages. He joins the newly established Jewish Theater in Berlin, while Maria's career flourishes at a prestigious Munich theater. Unable to bear the separation, Maria makes an extraordinary choice: she fakes her own death, assumes a Jewish identity as Manja Löwenthal, and abandons her successful career to rejoin Mark at the Jewish Theater. The film explores how love and conscience collide with survival and ambition during one of history's darkest periods.
