Dad is a BBC1 sitcom that aired for two series and a Christmas special, exploring the chaos of three generations under one roof. George Cole stars as Brian Hook, a mischievous father whose antics constantly frustrate his middle-aged son Alan (Kevin McNally), caught between his own teenage son Vincent (Toby Ross-Bryant) and his aging parent. Written by Andrew Marshall with each episode title a pun on "Dad," the comedy mines awkward family moments: Vincent throws a house party while Alan's forced to babysit his father; Brian falls ill and drags Alan on a disastrous shopping trip that leaves him with a garish Hawaiian shirt. Julia Hills rounds out the household as Beryl Hook. The first series featured Herb Alpert's "Tijuana Taxi" as its theme; the second switched to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's "Go Daddy-O." A sharp generation-gap comedy that finds humour in the universal frustration of being sandwiched between youth and age.
