Short Tutorial on Loving(1982)

Short Tutorial on Loving is a Latvian film set in the rural countryside of the late 19th century. Jānis seeks a wife but struggles to find the right match. He devises an unusual scheme: he pretends to have gone deaf after exposure to church bells, then visits neighbouring farms to eavesdrop on private conversations. As he listens to the true nature of those around him, only Ilze—the blacksmith's sister—shows genuine compassion, concerned for his wellbeing and hoping to help cure his supposed affliction.
