24 City is a documentary-essay film that captures the demolition of a historic state-run aeronautics factory in Chengdu, China, and its replacement by a luxury residential complex. Director Jia Zhangke interviews workers, engineers, and others connected to the facility, weaving together their personal memories and reflections on decades of industrial life. The film becomes a meditation on China's rapid modernization, the human cost of progress, and the erasure of collective memory. Through intimate conversations and archival footage, 24 City examines what is lost when old infrastructure gives way to new development, offering a poignant portrait of a vanishing era and the people shaped by it.
