The Emergency Exit(1982)

The Emergency Exit is a Polish comedy set in a provincial town during the early 1980s. When Mrs. Kolęda, an ambitious community leader, discovers her unemployed daughter Dorota is pregnant, she panics at the thought of scandal and lost standing. Desperate to save face, Mrs. Kolęda hatches a scheme: hire a man to marry Dorota, then divorce him once the child is born. Her gentle husband tends his ducks and flowers at home, oblivious to the chaos his wife sets in motion. What follows is a darkly comic exploration of small-town reputation, family pressure, and the lengths people will go to maintain appearances. The film captures the anxieties and absurdities of life under communism, where social standing mattered as much as survival.
