Manto Mavrogenous(1971)
Manto Mavrogenous is a historical film set in Vienna in 1820, following a Greek woman who encounters a group of revolutionary students and becomes drawn into their cause. Returning to Greece, she joins the Friendly Society and uses her dowry to fund ships and military resources for the independence struggle. She develops a relationship with Dimitrios Ypsilanti, the society's founder, but faces fierce opposition from political leaders, particularly Ioannis Kolettis, who fears their growing influence could threaten the future of the new nation. To drive a wedge between them, Kolettis enlists the help of a beautiful nun named Niki, recently arrived from Paris. The film chronicles passion, political intrigue, and sacrifice during Greece's fight for freedom from Ottoman rule.
