The Idiot(1946)

The Idiot follows Prince Muichkine, a young Russian nobleman who returns to St. Petersburg from a mental institution intent on spreading goodness and compassion. Caught between his betrothal to an innocent girl and his desire to rescue a morally compromised woman from despair, Muichkine's naivete and the jealousy of those around him spiral toward devastating consequences. This 19th-century drama explores the collision between idealism and a world indifferent to virtue, as the prince's sincere efforts to do right only deepen the tragedy consuming those closest to him. Based on Dostoevsky's classic novel, the film examines whether genuine kindness can survive in a society built on cruelty and self-interest.
