We've Never Been to Venice(2008)
We've Never Been to Venice is a Slovenian drama about an aging father who drives from Germany to visit his son Grega and daughter-in-law Masha. An unspoken tragedy hangs over the family. Tone attempts to lighten the mood with a simple ice-cream outing, but the journey through the countryside becomes something far more complex. As they drive, Grega and Masha cycle through sudden emotional shifts—anger, despair, forced cheerfulness, anxiety, and depression—each lost in their own grief. Though physically together, they drift further apart. Tone's well-intentioned escape only underscores how distance cannot heal what has fractured their bond. The film explores how trauma isolates us even among loved ones, and how some wounds cannot be soothed by a change of scenery.
