Luisa Miller: Metropolitan Opera(1979)
Luisa Miller is a Metropolitan Opera production of Verdi's tragic romance, starring Renata Scotto as the devoted Luisa and Plácido Domingo as Rodolfo, a nobleman's son. When Rodolfo's father, Count Walter, forbids their love and schemes to separate them, the villainous Wurm uses blackmail to destroy the young couple's hopes. Luisa's father fights desperately to protect his daughter, but corruption and class conflict prove insurmountable. James Levine conducts with warmth and nuance, while director Nathaniel Merrill's staging captures the opera's emotional intensity. This performance showcases some of the finest singing of the era, with Sherrill Milnes delivering a particularly moving turn as Luisa's father. A definitive recording of one of Verdi's most poignant works.
