Nothing but Troubles(1954)
Nothing but Troubles is a Norwegian drama following the Bråten family, a working-class household cramped into a single room and kitchen in an Oslo tenement. Mother Hulda holds the family together while her withdrawn husband works in silence. Their three sons and two daughters are a constant source of neighborhood complaints—until police involvement in a car theft escalates tensions dramatically. Sixteen-year-old Maiken rebels against her stern father, gravitating toward questionable companions and drifting further from home. As conflict deepens and chaos mounts, a tragedy forces the fractured family to confront their bonds and find their way back to one another. The film captures the struggles of poverty and family strain in postwar Scandinavia with unflinching realism.
