History of Brazil is an experimental film created between Cuba and Rome from 1971 to 1973 by Brazilian filmmaker Glauber Rocha. Considered semi-finished by its maker, the work employs dialectical editing to trace Brazil's colonial past, class conflicts, and rise of populist movements. Rather than conventional narrative, Rocha constructs a "polyphonic" history through archival materials—films, engravings, photographs—that build free associations across centuries. The film's pedagogical approach invites viewers to draw their own connections between events, examining how colonization, messianism, and Third World politics shaped the nation. History of Brazil remains a challenging, intellectually demanding meditation on how history itself is constructed and understood.
