Mologa. Russian Atlantis is a documentary film exploring the submersion of an ancient Russian city. During the 1930s and 1940s, construction of the Rybinsk reservoir flooded Mologa along with seven hundred surrounding villages, one hundred and forty churches and monasteries. The catastrophe submerged an area spanning 4,600 square kilometers, erasing a centuries-old settlement from the map. The film investigates what was lost beneath the waters and examines the mysteries that remain unsolved about this vanished city. Through archival materials and historical investigation, it pieces together the story of Mologa's final days and the cultural heritage consumed by one of the Soviet era's largest engineering projects.
