Being Different is a documentary that celebrates the lives and achievements of people whose physical appearances set them apart from conventional standards. The film introduces viewers to a diverse community: exceptionally tall and large individuals, a bearded woman and her devoted husband, conjoined twins, and several little people including actor Billy Barty. Shot partly in Gibsonton, Florida—a winter haven for carnival performers—the documentary captures candid conversations about their experiences and accomplishments. The camera travels across America to meet additional subjects: a grandfather with a distinctive facial appearance, a legless mechanic from Kentucky enjoying a second honeymoon in Los Angeles, a footless marathon runner and motivational speaker, a karate student with partial limbs, and an armless mother in Texas. Being Different presents an intimate portrait of resilience, humor, and the human spirit beyond physical difference.
