Pebble Mill at One(1972)
Pebble Mill at One was a British lunchtime magazine series that aired live weekdays at 1 p.m. on BBC1 from 1972 to 1986. Broadcast from BBC Birmingham's Pebble Mill studios, the show was uniquely staged in the building's main foyer rather than a conventional studio—a practical solution born from lack of available facilities. As the programme gained popularity, the foyer was gradually converted into a proper studio space. With daytime television scarce in Britain at the time, Pebble Mill at One developed a devoted audience among housewives, students, and the housebound, who valued its variety and the unpredictable charm of live broadcasting. The show's distinctive theme, "As You Please" by the Raymond Lefevre orchestra, became iconic. Edited by figures including Terry Dobson and Peter Hercombe, it ran for nearly fourteen years before concluding in May 1986.
