Emperor of the Sea(2004)

Emperor of the Sea is a South Korean historical drama that follows Jang Bogo's rise from slavery to become a dominant maritime power during the Unified Silla Dynasty. Directed by Kang Il-soo and Kang Byung-taek, the series stars Choi Soo-jong, Chae Shi-ra, Song Il-gook and Soo Ae. It aired on KBS2 from November 2004 to May 2005 across 51 episodes, based on Choi In-ho's acclaimed novel. The drama charts Bogo's transformation as he builds an empire controlling East Asian seas and international trade, navigating political intrigue and personal ambition. Emperor of the Sea became a ratings phenomenon, consistently ranking first throughout its run, and was exported to eight countries. The Wando County filming location in South Jeolla Province became a tourist destination in its own right.
