Gokenin Zankuro(1995)
Gokenin Zankuro is a Japanese period drama following a low-ranking samurai struggling to survive in Edo-era Japan. Zankuro Matsudaira works as a bodyguard and executioner to supplement his meager stipend as a vassal of the Tokugawa Shogun, while battling a drinking habit and supporting his demanding mother. Despite his financial troubles, he's driven by a strong sense of justice that compels him to aid the oppressed—a costly moral compass. His mother Masajo, descended from a prestigious line of shogunate retainers and skilled in both martial arts and calligraphy, views her son as a disappointment. The series explores the tension between duty, honor, and survival in a rigid feudal hierarchy, anchored by Ken Watanabe's portrayal of a flawed but principled man caught between personal weakness and social obligation.
