Fireball XL5(1962)
Fireball XL5 is a 1962 science fiction series following Colonel Steve Zodiac and the crew of an advanced spacecraft on missions for the World Space Patrol. Created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, the show pioneered Supermarionation—a sophisticated puppetry technique that became the Andersons' signature style. The series name came from a Castrol motor oil brand that caught Anderson's ear during development. Thirty-nine black and white episodes were produced on 35mm film, making Fireball XL5 the only Anderson series to air on a major US network, running on NBC's Saturday morning block from 1963 to 1965. The show's success established the template for Anderson's later colour productions, including Stingray and Captain Scarlet, cementing his influence on British science fiction television.
