The Twelve Chairs is a Soviet comedy set in the late 1920s, following con artist Ostap Bender and down-on-his-luck nobleman Ippolit Vorobyaninov as they race across the country in search of a fortune in diamonds. The treasure is hidden inside one of twelve chairs from an aristocratic dining set, but the chairs have been scattered after being auctioned off to different buyers. What begins as a simple scheme spirals into a chaotic cross-country adventure, pitting the unlikely pair against each other, rival treasure hunters, and the absurdities of Soviet life. Brimming with satire and physical comedy, the film captures the desperation and cunning of its era while poking fun at the social upheaval of post-revolutionary Russia. The hunt becomes as much about survival and ambition as it is about the elusive prize.
