King of the Castle(1977)

King of the Castle is a British children's series made by HTV for ITV in 1977. Written by Bob Baker and Dave Martin, it follows Roland, a lonely boy living unhappily with his father and stepmother in a council flat. When he flees from local bullies into a malfunctioning lift, Roland tumbles into a surreal fantasy world where familiar people and places appear as twisted, strange variations of his real life. The series blends dark humour with imaginative world-building as Roland navigates this bewildering realm. Philip Da Costa stars as Roland, alongside Talfryn Thomas, Fulton Mackay, Milton Johns and Angela Richards. A distinctive product of 1970s British children's television, King of the Castle combines escapism with an unsettling edge that sets it apart from gentler fare of its era.
