Open Space
Open Space(1983)
Open Space is a BBC series produced by the Community Programme Unit that gave minority groups and grassroots organizations the chance to create their own television programmes about issues that mattered to them. Building on the earlier Open Door format, each Open Space instalment provided a producer, assistant, and budget of up to £25,000 to realize the vision of participating communities. The half-hour programmes aired on BBC 2 in prime mid-evening slots, regularly drawing between 500,000 and 1.5 million viewers. Typically two or three batches of up to eight programmes would air annually, making Open Space a distinctive platform for underrepresented voices to reach a substantial television audience during the height of British public broadcasting.
