Issei Sagawa: Excuse Me For Living is a documentary biography of the Japanese student who murdered his Dutch girlfriend in 1981, dismembered her body, and consumed parts of it. Declared insane months later, Sagawa was transferred to a French psychiatric hospital where he wrote In the Fog, a memoir of his crime that sold 200,000 copies. France released him in 1984 on condition he return to a Japanese mental institution, but Japan discharged him after a year. Since his release, Sagawa has authored five books on crime and gained notoriety within avant-garde circles. The film features extensive interviews with Sagawa himself, who reads passages from his published works and reflects on his case.
