Samuel Barber: Absolute Beauty is a documentary film that explores the life and music of America's greatest yet underappreciated composers. Known for his haunting "Adagio for Strings," Barber struggled against changing musical fashions throughout his career. The film weaves together performance, oral history, musicology, and biography to reveal the melancholia beneath his most celebrated works. Featuring baritone Thomas Hampson, conductor Leonard Slatkin, and maestro Marin Alsop alongside world-leading Barber scholars, the documentary includes tributes from fellow composers Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Virgil Thomson, and William Schuman. Originally broadcast on PBS, the film screened at nine international festivals and earned three best-of awards. MusicWeb International named it a Recording of the Year in 2017.
