Brownsville Bred is a coming-of-age series set in 1980s New York City, following eight-year-old Elaine as she navigates life in a Brownsville, Brooklyn welfare project with her large family. One of the few Puerto Rican households in her neighborhood, Elaine finds joy in her musically gifted father Manny and her intellectually disabled aunt Elizabeth, her closest companions. Idolizing her father and proud of the artistic talent she's inherited, Elaine sees her world through an innocent, optimistic lens. Her childhood contentment shatters when she uncovers a devastating secret that will reshape her understanding of family and forever alter the course of her life.
