The show ran for seven seasons on Network Ten before concluding in November 2009, then returned with a revival in January 2023. Based on the British format Pop Idol created by Simon Fuller, Australian Idol became a cultural phenomenon, discovering homegrown vocal talent through live auditions and public voting. Between 2005 and 2007, the series also aired on Austereo Radio Network, expanding its reach across the country.
