Dead Souls(1984)

Dead Souls is a Russian series that follows Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov as he arrives in a provincial town with an audacious scheme: to purchase the titles of deceased serfs and use them as collateral for a substantial loan. Chichikov begins approaching local landowners with his proposition, but quickly discovers that greed and pettiness run deeper than he anticipated. The landowners prove frustratingly unpredictable—some stall indefinitely, others refuse without explanation, a few promise then renege on their word, and several demand a cut of the profits. As Chichikov navigates their contradictions and self-interest, he realizes the venture is doomed. Concluding that the landowners are beyond reason, he abandons the scheme and moves on to seek his fortune elsewhere.
