Ed and Zed! was a BBC children's programme that aired around 1970, hosted by disc jockey Ed Stewart and his mechanical co-star Zed, a cheeky "rebel robot" who frequently needled his sometimes irritable human partner. The show's quirky premise inverted the typical robot narrative: audiences were encouraged to root for Zed's mischievous antics rather than Stewart's authority. A running gag saw Zed end nearly every episode by overloading himself into hysterical laughter, sending plumes of smoke billowing from his back.
