Total Request Live was MTV's flagship music video countdown series, airing primarily Monday through Thursday. The show ranked the day's ten most-requested videos based on viewer votes, chart performance, downloads, radio airplay, and streams. TRL became essential promotional real estate for musicians and celebrities launching new work to its core teen audience. Daily celebrity guests and live performances complemented the countdown format, though many episodes were pre-recorded despite the "Live" title. As MTV shifted toward reality programming, TRL remained the network's primary outlet for music videos throughout the late 1990s and 2000s. The series concluded with a three-hour finale on November 16, 2008, before being replaced by FNMTV.
