Gesto(2011)

Gesto is a Portuguese coming-of-age film following Antonio, a profoundly deaf eighteen-year-old who dreams of studying cinema abroad and becoming a director. His ambition to create films for both deaf and hearing audiences forces him to confront his identity and challenge the expectations of his deaf community. As he pursues this goal, Antonio navigates his first love with Irina, a deaf young woman who questions his desire to leave school and Portugal behind. Caught between personal ambition and belonging, Antonio must decide whether chasing his dream is worth the cost of disrupting everything he knows. The film explores themes of identity, artistic aspiration, and the tension between individual dreams and community bonds.
