Ecstasy and orthodoxy in the 14th century!

Anchoress is a medieval drama following a 14th-century peasant girl who becomes obsessed with a statue of the Virgin Mary. Convinced of a divine calling, she petitions the church to be walled into a small cell attached to the sanctuary, choosing a life of total isolation as a religious hermit. Trapped behind stone with only a narrow window to the outside world, she endures physical hardship and psychological torment while the villagers around her interpret her sacrifice through their own spiritual lens. The film explores themes of faith, devotion, and the cost of religious conviction in an era when extreme piety was both revered and questioned. Anchoress examines what drives a young woman to such radical self-denial and whether her visions represent genuine spiritual awakening or psychological crisis.
