Blaník(1997)
Blaník is a Czech film that explores the legendary mountain and its cultural significance through the lens of historian Zdeněk Cimrman's analysis. Cimrman argues that the Blaník legend endures in Bohemian tradition because of the nation's precarious geographical position—caught between Western German imperialism and Eastern Russian expansionism. Drawing on the work of historian František Palacký, the film examines how a small nation under such geopolitical pressure naturally turns to mythology and the supernatural for protection and survival. The mountain's legend of sleeping knights ready to defend the homeland becomes a mirror for Czech anxieties about sovereignty and independence. This documentary-style work traces how geography shapes national mythology and collective memory.
