The Traitor(1936)
The Traitor is a 1936 espionage film set in Nazi Germany, following foreign intelligence agents as they infiltrate the German industrial machine. Morris and Geyer, operatives working for an unnamed enemy power, place a newspaper advertisement seeking contacts within German industry. They recruit Brockau, an engineer who has developed a process for converting oil into gasoline—a technology of strategic value. Desperate for money to satisfy his demanding girlfriend's expensive tastes, Brockau accepts their offer. Meanwhile, Hans Klemm, a former banker now serving in the Wehrmacht, becomes another target. When enemy agents blackmail him with compromising information, Klemm is forced into espionage work. The film explores how greed and coercion transform ordinary Germans into traitors, caught between personal weakness and the machinery of wartime intelligence operations.
