Heart of the Sun(1998)
The truth sometimes sleeps, but it never dies.
Heart of the Sun is a Depression-era drama set in rural Alberta that explores faith, shame, and bodily autonomy. A farmer's wife believes her childlessness is divine punishment for her sins. As the story unfolds, a darker truth emerges: she was sterilized following an affair with a local priest, part of a brutal cover-up orchestrated by the church and her own family. Trapped between her husband's expectations and the weight of institutional cruelty, she must confront the lies that have defined her life. The film examines how religious authority and family loyalty can conspire to silence women and control their bodies, set against the hardship and isolation of 1930s prairie life.
