Berga: Soldiers of Another War(2003)
Berga: Soldiers of Another War is a documentary that reveals the untold story of 350 American POWs captured during the Battle of the Bulge in winter 1944. In violation of the Geneva Convention, Jewish American soldiers from the 106th Infantry Division—along with those perceived as Jewish based on their names or appearance—were separated from other prisoners and sent to Berga am Elster, a slave-labor satellite camp of Buchenwald. The film, Charles Guggenheim's final work, examines how these men became trapped in the Holocaust's machinery despite their status as American soldiers. Through survivor testimony and historical documentation, it uncovers a chapter of World War II history long suppressed, exposing the intersection of military capture, antisemitism, and genocide.
