The Humanist(2001)

The Humanist is a Thai comedy that follows Te-o from childhood isolation to unexpected friendship. As a wealthy boy, Te-o initially buys companionship with money and treats, but forms genuine bonds with two orphans, Euglena and Amoeba. Years later, Te-o returns home after abandoning his overseas education to find Euglena struggling as an artist and Amoeba mentally disabled from a past head injury. When a drunken encounter with a police officer ends in accidental death, the officer's partner exploits their vulnerability, demanding 20 million dollars for their freedom despite their innocence. What follows is a chaotic spiral of kidnapping, corruption, and dark humor as the three friends navigate an absurd system designed to exploit them. The film explores friendship, morality, and survival against institutional indifference.
