Tilman Riemenschneider is a biographical film about the renowned German wood sculptor who rose from humble origins to become a respected councillor in Würzburg during the Renaissance. Born around 1460, Riemenschneider earned the devotion of common people through his art and his commitment to their welfare, while also securing patronage from the art-loving Prince-Bishop Konrad von Thüngen. When the Peasants' Revolt reaches Würzburg in 1525, Riemenschneider's moral convictions force him to champion the peasants' cause, a stance that transforms his patron into a bitter enemy. After the uprising is brutally suppressed, the Prince-Bishop imprisons him in retaliation. Though released weeks later with his hands shattered, Riemenschneider's spirit remains unbroken. The film explores the collision between artistic genius, social conscience, and political power in sixteenth-century Germany.
