The Beales of Grey Gardens(2006)
Utilizing hours of unseen archival footage, The Beales is a new take on the women of Grey Gardens
The Beales of Grey Gardens is a documentary portrait of two eccentric women living in a decaying East Hampton mansion. Big Edie, in her seventies, and her daughter Little Edie, in her fifties, share the cluttered house with six cats, creating a world unto themselves. Little Edie, dressed in vibrant scarves and colors, performs for the camera with theatrical flair, while her mother recites poetry and sings with surprising grace. Filmmakers Al and David Maysles capture their daily routines—visits from friends, a household fire, trips to the beach—as Little Edie reflects on faith, shame over a cat-related raid by authorities, and her fierce pride in nonconformity. The film unfolds episodically, revealing two women who have chosen isolation and eccentricity over conventional life, finding meaning in their peculiar domestic rituals and each other's company.
