Zombies(2019)

Zombies is a surreal journey through a hallucinatory Kinshasa that blurs hope and dystopia. The film moves fluidly between intimate spaces—hair salons where community gathers—and futuristic isolation, from urban parades to the grandiose fantasies of a dictator. Stylistically indebted to Takeshi Kitano's spare, violent aesthetic, Zombies constructs a modern western within the Democratic Republic of Congo's sprawling capital. The narrative refuses conventional storytelling, instead offering a fever-dream portrait of urban life, power, and cultural resilience. Visually inventive and thematically complex, the film uses its dreamlike setting to explore themes of survival, authority, and collective identity in a city caught between tradition and transformation.
