Schönberg: Gurre-Lieder is a film documenting the Dutch National Opera's 2014 production of Arnold Schönberg's monumental late-Romantic cantata. The work explores timeless themes of forbidden love and human suffering through a Scandinavian saga set in the medieval castle of Gurre. King Waldemar's passion for the mysterious Tove, a figure caught between the human and natural worlds, ends in tragedy when the jealous queen orders her death.
