Gallant Indies(2021)

Gallant Indies is a documentary film that captures the Paris Opera's bold reimagining of Jean-Philippe Rameau's 1735 baroque masterpiece Les Indes galantes. Director Clément Cogitore, a visual artist, fuses the classical opera-ballet with contemporary urban dance—krump, popping, voguing, and experimental hip hop—under choreographer Bintou Dembélé's direction. Filmmaker Philippe Béziat follows the rehearsal process and premiere, documenting the collision between street dancers and the venerable lyric institution. The result is an intimate portrait of artistic collaboration, where centuries-old music meets modern movement in an unexpected cultural exchange that challenges both traditions.
