The School for Wives(2020)

The School for Wives is a film adaptation of Molière's 17th-century French comedy, reimagined through a contemporary lens with an all-female, primarily non-white cast. The story centers on Arnolphe, a character of power and privilege who attempts to control those around her, only to discover the limits of that dominion. By casting a Black woman in this traditionally male role, the film interrogates systems of oppression and the futility of subjugating human autonomy. The production uses classical material to examine modern questions of gender dynamics, racism, and sexism, arguing that justice and equality ultimately prevail over attempts at control. Molière's satire becomes a vehicle for exploring how power structures fail when confronted with the irreducible humanity of others.
