Mommy(1999)

A chronicle of a Soviet family folk-band founded by a mother of six.

Mommy is a Russian drama following Polina, a mother of six abandoned after her husband's death in prison. Desperate to provide for her children, she forms a folk group with them, but eventually makes a radical choice: stealing a plane to escape the country. After fifteen years in prison, Polina is released to discover her sons scattered across Russia—one serving in the army, another working in the Donbass mines, and her eldest confined to a psychiatric hospital, feigning madness. Determined to reunite her fractured family, Polina embarks on a mission to free her oldest son and reclaim the life stolen from them. The film explores themes of maternal sacrifice, survival, and the cost of desperation in post-Soviet Russia.
