Les Déracinés(1972)

Les Déracinés is a 1962 French drama set during the Algerian War of Independence. Captain Sainbenin commands a newly formed commando unit and clashes with military hierarchy over his unconventional tactics—aggressive intelligence gathering and brutal interrogation methods to root out rebels. When four generals stage a coup against De Gaulle in Algiers, Sainbenin's men face an impossible choice: remain loyal to the government or join the fight for French Algeria. Caught between duty and ideology, these soldiers become pawns in a larger political struggle, their personal convictions sacrificed for a cause that demands everything. The film explores the moral cost of warfare and the tragedy of men torn between competing loyalties during one of France's most turbulent colonial conflicts.
