Beefcake(1998)

Beefcake is a documentary examining the 1950s muscle magazines that marketed themselves as fitness publications but primarily served an underground gay audience. Bob Mizer, the industry's most prominent figure, ran a magazine and produced sexually suggestive films for over four decades, building a roster of male models with his mother's help. The film traces how these publications operated in the shadows of mid-century America, creating a coded visual language for a community forced to hide. Through archival material and interviews, Beefcake reveals the ingenuity and risk involved in maintaining this thriving subculture during an era of intense social repression and legal danger.
